The Japanese people are finally going to be able to buy the weight loss medication Xenical in their own country. Following extensive negotiations the Japanese drug company Taisho Pharmaceutical Co has come to an agreement with GlaxoSmithKline to market and develop in the orlistat drug in Japan.

Taisho explained that there are around 16 million overweight people in Japan of which almost 13 million are obese meaning that they have a BMI of 30+ which meant that the Xenical weight loss drug could help a lot of people to lose weight there. The Xenical weight loss drug is at present sold in around 150 countries around the world.

The Japanese people have a traditional diet which is extremely healthy involving vegetables, rice and fish. The Japanese people are also very fond of sushi as well as steamed food which are both low in fat. The Japanese people are also very hard working and active which has kept obesity levels in check.

In recent years however the Japanese diet has become increasingly westernised and more and more young Japanese people are eating hamburgers, chips and other very high calorie foods which have contributed to the growing obesity problem in Japan. Another problem is that with globalisation and modernisation many more Japanese people work in offices and thus do very little physical activity during the day.

The weight loss drug Xenical works by stopping the absorption of some of the fat that you eat into the digestive system. By taking a Xenical tablet around 1/3 of the fat consumed in a meal is excreted out of the digestive system.
