Xenical Popularity Is Increasing

The number of men and women using prescription weight loss medication in the UK is still rising despite efforts from doctors to provide nutritional advice on diet and exercise routines to their patients. According to government figures around almost 1.5 million weight loss prescriptions were issued for obesity drugs in 2009 which represents a 13% rise on the figure for 2008 and a two thirds increase in prescriptions from the 2005 figures.

Two things are fueling the increase in weight loss medications in Britain. First there is the ever increasing obesity problem caused by unhealthy fast food diets and secondly the growing acceptance by doctors that weight loss medications in many cases are the only real solution for certain people to lose weight. In the UK it is estimated that around 25% of all adults now have a BMI of 30 plus meaning that they are clinically obese. This is significantly more than most countries on the European mainland.
The two most prescribed medications in the UK in 2009 were Reductil and Xenical, with Xenical taking the top spot especially after Reductil was discontinued after medical concerns that it could increase the likelihood of heart attacks. In all over 900,000 Xenical prescriptions were issued in the United Kingdom in 2009. This drug which works by blocking the absorption of fat into the digestive tract produces fast results if used properly alongside diet and exercise.
Ms. Tam Fry speaking on behalf of the National Obesity Forum said that she felt the statistics were shocking and that she was concerned that many people felt that weight loss drugs were a shortcut solution to getting in shape and that healthy eating and exercise was too time consuming.
At Ukmedix News we have seen how weight loss drugs can have a significant impact in helping people to lose weight but it is important that everyone also understand that a certain amount of effort is required from you in order to obtain best results.
