Xenical Being Used For Teenagers In Taiwan

Written by Stuart Stevens | Friday, 08 December 2006

The administration of the weight loss drug Xenical is becoming more widespread with the news that the health authorities in Taiwan are allowing the use of the drug with teenagers in some exceptional cases. The Taiwanese health authority is reacting to the news that 25% of teenagers are now considered to be clinically overweight and the crisis is likely to get worse before it gets better.

The weight loss drug Xenical that is made by the Swiss drug giant Roche is the only medicine that is allowed to be used by teenagers in Taiwan to overcome obesity. The use of the drug however is restricted only to teenagers who have a BMI of 30 or above making them clinically obese.

The Body Mass Index is the worldwide standard that measures height and weight to come up with a ration figure to determine if you are overweight or obese. If your BMI is seen to be below 18.5 you are considered underweight and these people have been noted to suffer more from disease as well as people with BMI’s of over 25 meaning that they are overweight and especially people with a BMI of 30+ that puts them in the obese category. It is important to aim for a BMI of over 18.5 and under 25 for good health.

The Xenical drug can give obese people a helping hand in losing weight and is becoming a very popular weight loss medication all over the world. Some obese people who only see tiny results with diet and exercise can get great encouragement from using Xenical as it gives that extra boost that makes you see significant results.

In Taiwan the rules for the use of Xenical in 12 to 18 year olds is very strict and has been limited to those who are obese and who have been unable to shed weight in any other way and whose blood sugar or uric acid levels are above normal. The Taiwanese Health authorities do not want the drug to be abused by teenagers who think that they will lose weight by just popping a pill.

Xenical has side effects that will be aggravated if the drug is not used properly and must be used in conjunction with a weight loss diet.
