Roche Contesting Xenical Advert Ban

Written by Stuart Stevens | Thursday, 28 June 2007

At Ukmedix News we believe that Xenical should be a prescription medication...

The drug company Roche is taking a government agency to court in Australia after a ban on Xenical advertising was initiated in the country. The Federal Health Committee banned public advertising of the novel weight loss drug Xenical because they said pharmacist were being put under undue pressure to sell the product to many people who were not suitable to use it. Xenical should only be used by people who are overweight and not by normal weight people trying to shed a few pounds.

Roche Contesting Xenical Advert Ban

A consumer watchdog called Choice in Australia claimed that many teenagers who are self conscious about their weight were being targeted in the advertisements that were being shown on prime TV. They were especially critical because the adverts had been shown during a very popular television program called Australian Idol that is watched by millions of teenagers over the country.

Roche has formally announced that it will be taking legal action against individual members of the National Drugs & Poisons Scheduling Committee because they feel that the action in banning the Xenical weight loss advertisements was misguided and unfair.

The weight loss drug Xenical is purchased over the counter in Australia meaning that a prescription from a doctor is not needed for you to use it. This means that you can just walk into any pharmacy and thus request the orlistat Xenical weight loss drug and subsequently many people are using it who do not fully understand how it functions and its side effects. Technically the pharmacist could explain to you the full implications of using Xenical however a over a busy pharmaceutical counter it is not practical to explain that Xenical requires a low fat diet and that you could also suffer from diarrhea if you do not use it properly.

At Ukmedix News we firmly believe that Xenical should be a prescription medication because independent research has shown that people who use the weight loss medication with proper, clear and concise information about how it functions and how best to use it will lose far more weight than people who do not have the quality information. Doctors are obviously best placed to give that information and that is why we think that prescriptions are so important before you use the Xenical obesity drug.
