Alli OTC Questioned By Some Doctors

Concerns have been raised by a leading obesity expert about whether the weight loss medication Alli should be made available over the counter to overweight and obese individuals who are trying to lose weight.

Dr Donal O’Shea as well as being a consultant endocrinologist is the director of the Weight Management Clinic at St Columcille’s Hospital in Ireland, explained that he felt it would have been better if the drug had not been made available over the counter due to the fact that detailed medical counseling and advice was always needed alongside its use.
Alli which recently received full European Union approval contains the active ingredient orlistat which is also found in the weight loss medication Xenical. The difference between Alli and Xenical is that Alli has a much lower dose of this active ingredient and therefore it is considered by the European Union to be safe to be handed over the counter at the pharmacy.
Dr O’Shea said that he was concerned that men and women would buy this drug without being told that a low fat diet and exercise were also necessary for it to work effectively. In clinical testing it has been seen that the Xenical drug helps men and women to lose weight considerably faster and more effectively than if they don’t use it.
GlaxoSmithKline who manufacture the Alli weight loss drug said that pharmacies would be required to give advice to men and women who bought this drug about how to use it. They also explained that the Alli drug would not be given to people who had a BMI of less than 28.
At Ukmedix News we have seen how effective the weight loss drug Xenical can be if it is used correctly and by the right people and we have also seen that many people who do not use it correctly do not get good results. We believe that you are far more likely to get good results using the orlistat if you get a proper doctor’s consultation along with it as opposed to a chat over a pharmacy counter.
