Mind over matter and dealing with the psychological influences that cause us to make bad food choices can often be a major hurdle for people trying to lose weight. Dieters need to learn how to handle emotions, hunger pangs, mood swings and cravings which they will definitely face at some point in their weight loss attempts. If you can learn to deal with these things you are more than halfway there in getting fit and slim.

The most important thing that you need to learn is to understand how to differentiate between when you are actually hungry and when you just have a craving to eat. For example if you walk past a shop selling delicious doughnuts the chances are you are not really hungry but you are just craving one and you should really learn to tell the difference. Being in control of your cravings can give you a sense of power that is extremely liberating. In order to control your cravings you must be extremely honest with yourself about what you have eaten previously and whether you really are hungry or not.
Another way to deal with cravings is to distract yourself from them. Don’t try to beat them head on with willpower alone but instead go and do something which takes your mind off them. Some people swear that by going for a short walk or making themselves a hot cup of tea is all that is required to forget about the food cravings. Don’t start feeling sorry yourself and try to justify unhealthy eating because it is a self destructive pattern of thought that will cause you to put on weight.
Having a positive mental attitude and a proactive stance on weight loss is very important. People who feel that they are deprived and who feel sorry for themselves when they are losing weight are far more likely to fail in their weight loss attempt.
