In South Africa the regulatory body, the Medicines Control Council (MCC) have reported that there has been a massive increase in dangerous slimming products being imported from China, many of which contain powerful prescription medications in doses which are larger than the recommended amounts. They said that they have intercepted eight products found to contain larger than recommended doses of sibutramine, the ingredient in the weight loss drug Reductil.

Among the products that were intercepted by the Medicines Control Council are Forme Slim, Simply Slim, NuEvo, HNS New Me, Maxi Slim, Slimline, Evo Slim and Studio Slim. In one case a woman using the product Simply Slim sent the capsules for testing where it was established that they contained twice the recommended amount of sibutramine in them which could have led to fatal health problems like a heart attack. It was also noted that different batches of the same supplements contained different amounts of sibutramine meaning that individual tablets could be more dangerous than others.
It has now come to the point where so called traditional and natural supplements are so discredited because of the use of prescription weight loss drugs in them that health authorities around the world are saying that distributors and importers of these products which tend to come from China and other third world nations can no longer turn a blind eye to the problem and pretend that they didn't realise what they were distributing.
At Ukmedix News we believe that importers and distributors of weight loss medication should be held responsible for what they distribute and it is no longer fair that they can just deny any knowledge of what they contain. They should be made to test the products themselves and to certify that they are free of any prescription chemicals.
Many of these weight loss supplements are sold in health shops with the owners of these shops unaware of how dangerous the products that they sell are. More regulation is definitely needed for the dietary supplement industry and sooner rather than later before the bodies start to pile up!
