One of the biggest issues that people have who work in offices all day is that they say they don’t get enough exercise. In the United Kingdom for example the reason why there are so many obese people today has something to do with the fact that far more people work in sedentary offices these days than they did say 50 years ago. Sitting at your desk all day means that you do not burn up calories and these calories will therefore be turned into excess fat making you put on weight.

In order to combat this problem some scientists have been developing something that they call a “Vertical Work Station” which incorporates a fully functional treadmill so that you are able to work and to burn calories at the same time. The scientists say that someone who used their Vertical Work Station all year round could end up losing up to 30 kilos in weight in a year.
We had quite a discussion about this in the Ukmedix News newsroom and while we liked the idea that somebody could work and get exercise at the same time it could be a little bit impractical to have a treadmill under your desk. If you go to the gym you may notice some people on the cycling machines reading a book at the same time as working out but some of us in the newsroom reckoned that people would not be able to write as well and as concisely if they were standing up and walking on a treadmill.
At present these Vertical Work Stations have not been extensively tested and thus whether they will be accepted and used in offices around the UK is still not known. Many offices in the UK are now encouraging employees to take up gym memberships as it has been shown that employees who are fitter and in better health will work harder and be more productive for the company.
