The Dangers Of Too Much TV

Written by Stuart Stevens | Thursday, 01 November 2007

a lack of exercise alone can be a cause of hypertension.

The dangers of letting your children watch too much television should not be underestimated! A new study seen by the Ukmedix News team has shown that children who watch between 2 and 4 hours of TV daily are 2½ times more probable to suffer from hypertension (high blood pressure) which can in the long term lead to heart problems and even strokes when they are older.

The Dangers Of Too Much TV

The report that was printed in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine also saw the children who watched TV for over four hours a day had a risk factor of 3.3 times higher than normal from hypertension.

Along with high blood pressure, children who were watching a lot of TV were also seen to be much more heavy than those who did not watch TV. Some health commentators said that the children who watch a lot of TV were also far more likely to be exposed to television advertisements which were promoting junk food and other unhealthy types of food. In all over 500 children between the ages of four and seventeen were looked at over a two year period.

Interestingly the children who looked at TV alot tended to have high blood pressure irrespective of whether they were overweight or not which shows that a lack of exercise alone can be a cause of hypertension.

It is not simply just the act of watching television that causes high blood pressure but the fact that the people who tend to watch a lot of television are those people who tend not to get exercise and also tend to overeat. Parents should limit the amount of television that they allow their children to watch every day and make sure that they get some physical exercise in their free time as well.
