America Getting Tough On Obesity

Obesity prevention is something that needs to be invested in now...

Some of the American Federal States are beginning to realise exactly how serious the obesity problem is in America and are funding special programs that will help individuals to become aware of the issues surrounding being overweight and hopefully help them to lose weight.

America Getting Tough On Obesity

For example in Texas, the Head Comptroller Ms. Combs has allocated $20 million specifically to target schools that have a lot of people who are too fat. Entitled the New Texas Fitness Now Program, it will give money to schools so that they can employ full time nutrition, exercise and fitness experts to run a special lessons and courses for students. Any school in Texas is eligible to apply and the grants will be particularly targeted at schools in poor areas. Research that we have seen at Ukmedix News notes that people who live in deprived and low income locations are more likely to be overweight and obese when compared to their better off fellow citizens.

Financial analysts reckoned that obesity is costing Texas businesses well over $3 billion a year and therefore an investment of $20 million seems very small in comparison. Experts reckon that by the year 2025 if the amount of obese people continues to rise the State of Texas will be facing crippling medical bills that could bankrupt the state.

It is important that health authorities realise that obesity prevention is something that needs to be invested in now and children must be especially targeted. The reason for this is that the vast majority of kids who reach their teenage years being overweight or obese are extremely likely to stay that way for the rest of their lives. If children are educated in healthy eating habits they tend to stick with them for life and that means that when they are adults they should be trim and slim. The investments in childhood obesity prevention will not reap any returns for twenty years but the returns should be extremely good.
