We spend most of our time at Ukmedix News trying to explain to you the negative aspects of obesity and being overweight. There are hundreds of different diseases and illnesses that obesity is more likely to cause, things like heart disease, diabetes, hypertension and many types of cancer. Other negative aspects of obesity include reduced mobility, being uncomfortable much of the time, poor sleep and a generally reduced quality of life. Obese people have a great problem when it comes to buying clothes and trying to look good. They have to pay higher premiums for life assurance and often die younger.

In fact we know of no advantages of being overweight or obese. That was until today. A new story that has come into the Ukmedix newsroom claims that obese men are much less likely to commit suicide and therefore that goes to show that they must be happier and more fulfilled people. In a research study that involved over 40,000 men it was seen that those men with higher BMI’s had a lower chance of committing suicide. In fact the statistics clearly showed that they had a 40% lower chance of committing suicide compared to men who had normal or lower BMI’s.
The researchers cannot be 100 percent sure exactly why it is that obese men are less likely to commit suicide but they suspect that a particular hormone called insulin may be responsible. Insulin that is found more abundantly in larger and obese men and which is known to positively impact on other hormones that are known to impact on mood could be the reason why fatter people are generally happier and have a more positive outlook on living.
The study was only done concerning men as because women have different hormone levels the results could not be relevant to them.
