Ukmedix News has been studying the results of a survey done in America recently that listed the reasons why dieters felt hat they were failing in their weight loss efforts. The survey authors gave dieters a list of 10 different reasons to choose from and they were asked to mention the three which were the most relevant for them.

The different reasons and the percentage of people who responded to individual reasons are below:
1. No Real Incentive 76%.
2. Plain Hunger 72%.
3. Having Bad Days 70%.
4. Monotony and Boredom 69%.
5. Anxiety and Stress 60%.
6. People Interfering 51%.
7. Eating At Restaurants Too Often 32%.
8. No Time to Sit Down And Eat Proper Meals 28%.
9. Being Ill 5%.
10. Not Being Able To Sleep 1%.
The survey took answers from over 17,000 men and women of all ages and race in America. It is interesting to note that the No.1 reason is a lack of incentive. This means that these people are comfortable with being overweight or obese and that they see no real reason to go on a diet and lose weight. This is becoming an increasing problem in America as more and more people are overweight. Now that the figures show that over 2/3rds of men and women are obese or overweight you are now in the minority if you are of normal weight. This means that the social pressure and peer pressure to lose weight is much diminished whereas in other countries where the vast majority of people are thin there is more of an incentive to keep slim and trim.
What we noticed in the Ukmedix newsroom was that many of the reasons given were psychological reasons and not physical reasons like hunger. Things like having a bad day or stress and anxiety were very popular reasons for giving up on a diet. It just goes to show that much of what determines what you eat is based on your mood and on what is going on in your head at the time. If you are going to maintain weight loss and keep slim you must learn not to associate food with mood swings and bad days but to keep your eating habits on a even keel no matter what sort of day you are having.
