Revolutionary New Weight Loss Medicine In Pipeline

This would mean that people would feel full up almost immediately

A possible new remedy to help men and women lose weight has been discovered by scientists in the United Kingdom. The novel new approach to helping obese people involves the discovery of certain proteins that enable the stomach to expand when food is swallowed. The scientists said that if they were able to come up with a compound which would prevent these proteins from acting they would be able to make people have tighter and smaller stomachs.

They went on to say that research done in this area could mean that surgery would not be necessary for people with expanded guts and that they would be able instead just to take medication.

The research which was led by Professor Brian King saw how the stomach can expand to a size about 25 times larger than its normal size. The muscles in the stomach need to relax in order for this process to take place and certain proteins are needed to activate receptors in these muscles. The research involves using certain compounds which may be able to prevent these receptors from working and therefore stop the stomach from relaxing and getting larger. This would mean that people would feel full up almost immediately and would not continue to eat and stretch their stomach.

Professor King said that it should his research prove successful he would be able to “physiologically mimic” stomach-stapling without surgery. He said that nevertheless obese people should not be too hopeful as it was likely that his treatment would not be available for at least five years and the research which was being done on guinea pigs would not necessarily work in the same way for humans.

If this research is successful it would be hugely financially lucrative for the company who developed it as the weight loss market around the world is worth billions of pounds. Ukmedix News will be looking out for more developments on this new approach to weight loss.
