Obesity Could Change Your Genes

the gene network was “completely rocked” by eating a high fat diet

Some new research shows that people who eat too much and who are overweight or obese could actually be damaging their DNA. The research that was undertaken by Merck is interesting because it shows how obesity can affect the body in ways which were not previously known about.

Obesity Could Change Your Genes

According to the geneticist Dr Eric Schadt who works at the Merck Research Laboratories obesity can change complete networks of genes in the body. He saw that when mice were made to eat a high fat diet over time hundreds of different genes were affected. He said that the gene network was “completely rocked” by eating a high fat diet.

It is therefore very possible that the reason why people suffer from diabetes and heart disease due to obesity is not only because of the damage that unhealthy eating does directly to the health but also due to genetic damage and changes that occur as a result. Research with these genetic networks could mean that in the future scientists could invent testing to give patients the likely probability of what obesity related disease they would suffer from if they did become obese.

There are hundreds of different reasons why you should not be obese or overweight and this new research just adds to the weight of evidence to show the dangers of obesity. The researchers were keen to point out that the best ways to deal with a weight problem was to eat healthily, and to get good exercise. Healthy eating and exercise do not only make you retain a healthy weight but also have many other health benefits which will prevent you from getting sick and will make sure that you enjoy life as you get older.

The researchers also noted that some individuals have genetic networks which make them more probable to suffer from diabetes if they are obese and other individuals have genetic networks which make them more likely to suffer from the effects of high cholesterol and hardening arteries.
