A drug company called Nastech Pharma has just begun its phase two clinical testing for its new nasal spray code named PYY3-36 which they hope will be able to treat people who suffer from obesity. The company will be asking for around 500 obese volunteers to take part in a clinical trial over six months. The trial will be a placebo controlled, completely randomised study with weight loss being the ultimate goal.

Three different dose levels of the PYY3-36 Nasal Spray will be administered to the various patients and they will be compared to patients who are given a placebo pill as well as another group who will be given the weight loss medication sibutramine, (or Reductil to use its commercial name.) The researchers will also be evaluating patients for hemoglobin levels and will be taking note of not only weight loss but also percentages of baseline body weight lost.
If the drug company Nastech Pharma manages to get approval for its PYY3-36 Nasal Spray, it will be the first time that a weight loss spray has been approved for the market. The weight loss drug market is huge especially in America which has such a chronic obesity problem. A new weight loss appetite suppressant that could be administered in the way of a nasal inhaler could capture a significant segment of the market and make millions of dollars for Nastech Pharma.
Being able to take a quick sniff of a nasal inhaler would be very advantageous to people who were suffering from sudden hunger pangs. The convenience of taking this medicine could mean that it would be extremely popular. Ukmedix News will be following the development and testing of this new weight loss medication and we hope that the clinical results are good so that it can be brought on to the market soon.
