When the Acomplia diet drug came our there was a lot of buzz in the media about the fact that the key ingredient of the drug (namely Rimonabant) worked on receptor in the brain that was responsible for appetite and this receptor was the same one that was affected by men and women who smoke cannabis and who get the “munchies”.
GW Pharmaceuticals a drug company researching more weight loss and diet drugs has taken that research one step further and is now experimenting with the real thing …marijuana!!
The UK company has received special permission by the UK government and the relevant authorities to actually grow real marijuana in fields somewhere in the South of the UK and for security the plant has to be grown inside and its exact location is being kept secret.
Apparently the cannabis plant is far more complex than previously thought and contains as many as seventy different cannabinoid all of which do different things to the human body. Some of them obviously stimulate appetite and give the smokers the munchies but other are being researched because it is believed that they may actually suppress appetite rather than boost it.
The GW boss said that the new research has led to the formation of a drug that is undergoing proper clinical tests to check for the safety and effectiveness of the new drug. The new drug is likely to work in a similar way to the way that Acomplia works and so Sanofi Aventis will be surely watching for news on the outcome of this story that could have an effect on the likely 3 billion dollar market that some analysts have predicted for Acomplia.
Ukmedix will be looking out for developments and updates to this story and will keep readers and customers up to speed with them.
