Have you ever heard of a mandometer? No? Well nor had we at Ukmedix News until today! A mandometer is a special set of scales upon which a plate is put with food. As the food is eaten the scales which are connected to a computer can calculate how much each mouthful weighs. It can also measure the speed at which the food is eaten.

These machines are being used by overweight and obese young people to lose weight because it can encourage them to eat slowly and warn them if they are eating to fast. Eating to fast can make people eat too much and nutritionists advise that taking your time over a meal can reduce the amount you eat. The stomach sends signals to the brain to inform it when it is full but the signals can take as long as five or ten minutes to arrive and this is why eating quickly causes you to overeat.
The mandometer is equipped with a digital voice that tells you when you are eating too fast and advises you to slow down. It can even send you a signal to inform you when you should eat the next mouthful. More sophisticated mandometers will even ask you politely if you are really still hungry when you have eaten the recommended amount.
At Ukmedix News we have seen a lot of research which shows that obese people tend to eat extremely quickly and other research that shows that people who eat slowly tend to eat less. For example the Japanese people who eat with great ceremony in small mouthfuls over a long time are among the thinnest and most healthy people in the world.
Make a serious effort to eat slowly as this can greatly reduce your food consumption and actually make your meals far more enjoyable. Drink a little water between mouthfuls and try to make conversation during your meals. Another tip from an Italian news writer at Ukmedix News is that his grandmother always advised him that you should eat your spaghetti with a very small fork so that you can not eat too much too quickly!
