A drug that could enable healthy people to live longer...

New important research from the University of California shows yet again that by a reduced calorie intake you can live longer. These scientists also noted that it was especially important to lower the number of calories you eat later in life if you are to benefit from good health and longevity. It is a well known phenomenon that those who eat very small portions of food throughout their lives and especially in old age tend to live much longer than those who eat well even if they are not overweight or obese.

The lead researcher of the project professor Stephen Spindler said that they will be now using this new research to develop drugs which could have a similar effect on the human body as eating very little. A drug that could enable healthy people to live longer would be worth billions in the drug market place. Most of the research that is done on longevity is done with mice and other research that we have seen at Ukmedix News shows that mice who were given a low calorie diet can live for as much as 40 percent longer than those who are given a higher calorie diet which is just as nutritious.

Diets that are low in calories enable the body to repair and replace cells that have been damaged. As people grow older the ability of the body to repair these cells is diminished but in those people who eat low calorie diets it is found that this ability is not much impaired as they grow older. It is also thought that low calorie diets (because they allow the body to repair cells so effectively), mean that you are less likely to experience dangerous cancerous cells.

It is hoped that by looking at the gene expression patterns that are present in people with low calorie diets scientists will be able to make drugs that copy these patterns and thus the even people who eat a higher calorie diets will benefit from the anti aging properties of a low calorie diet. At Ukmedix News we know that is important to eat sensibly and include a lot of fresh and natural food in your diet if you want to have a long life. Fruit and vegetables are a must and exercise should also be a part of your lifestyle.
