According to Dr Michael Miller from the Medical Centre based at the University of Maryland in Baltimore the Atkins diet may cause serious long term injury to your blood vessels as well as increase the likelihood of you suffering from arterial and heart disease. In his research he noted that the Atkins diet would cause bad levels of cholesterol to rise by about seven percent whereas in other diets like the South Beach or the Ornish diet bad cholesterol lowered in patients by between seven and ten percent and also benefited the functioning of the arteries.

The research from Dr Michael Miller differed from many other research projects concerning diets in that he did not evaluate cholesterol levels in people as they were actually losing weight but waited until they had reached a weight loss plateau and when they were eating for weight maintenance as opposed to extra weight loss.
He said that when you lose weight, very often cholesterol levels drop significantly and so he wanted to examine the levels of cholesterol in people who had maintained a specific weight for a considerable period of time using different diets.
Different research projects have come up with different cholesterol results for these diets and as far as we are aware at Ukmedix News this is the only research in which the cholesterol levels were measured after the weight loss had occurred. Dr Miller was specifically looking for the levels of Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol which is the type that is known to block up blood vessels and arteries. Doctor Miller presented his findings to a conference of the American Heart Association.
At Ukmedix News we have a policy of not promoting any diet. All we say is that your diet must be balanced, have a correct amount of protein, carbohydrates, fruit and vegetables and that any diet which completely cuts out one particular type of food is likely to make you unhealthy in the long term.
