The problem of fake weight loss medication is growing in Israel according to media reports which show that the police have been kept busy clamping down on pharmacies that sell fake diet drugs that are passed off as the real thing. The police recently announced that they have seized consignments of drugs which were labelled as the weight loss drug Xenical but on close examination it was made clear that they had not originated from the manufacturer and patent holder of the drug namely the Swiss drug company Roche.

The police also warned people that these fake weight loss medications could have adverse effects which could be extremely dangerous for people using them. What is more disturbing however is that the Xenical tablets appeared to contain a prescription medication called sibutramine which is in fact the key ingredient in the weight loss medication Reductil.
The people who use Xenical do so because they have been advised by the doctors to do so and particularly because they could have been told by their doctors not to use Reductil because of the side effects. For example somebody who suffers from high blood pressure should not use Reductil but would be far better off using Xenical. The criminals who make this a fake Xenical medication are adding sibutramine to it meaning that they are potentially putting people’s lives in danger.
The good news is however that the Israeli police under the guidance of the National Unit for Intellectual Property have arrested two pharmacy owners who they believe may have been complicit in the distribution of the fake and dangerous weight loss medication.
All over the world Police forces are getting wise and catching up with criminals who make fake medications. The problem of fake medication has grown to ridiculous proportions of all over the globe and large drug companies and national governments are realising that the problem is getting out of hand and that they need to act to prevent these criminals endangering the lives of people.
