Don't Let Your Holiday Ruin Your Diet

Written by Stuart Stevens | Wednesday, 21 June 2006

It happens to everyone and it can be the trigger that starts a long spiral into obesity and the abandonment of a diet. Many people forget their long term diet goals when they are on holiday and over indulge and convince themselves that everything will go back to normal after the holiday.  It is often more difficult to stick to dieting routines on holiday for a number of reason such as the variety of food being different and the fact that you tend to eat out more and the food is delicious.

Ukmedix doesn't want to be a spoilsport and tell you to not deviate at all from your diet when on holiday but there are somethings that you can do to keep the right balance and to maintain your weight till you get back home and you get back into your usual routine.

Firstly remember just because you are on holiday doesn't mean that you need to eat more, so tell the waiter in a restaurant that you want a small portion and go for the healthier options on the menu like the steamed or grilled fish, keep away from the bread and ask for a salad starter to stop you getting too hungry. All good restaurants have low fat and low carb meals, you just have to choose carefully.

Take some tasty appetisers with you that you normally eat at home like nuts and fruit so that when you get the urge to snack you have something helathly onj hand and you don't end up going to eat something fatty and unhealthy. When on holiday you often are in th sun and you get very thirsty and some people confuse thirst with hunger. Keep drinking water as this will keep you from feeling so hungry and will also stop you from drinking sugary soft drinks loaded with calories. Even fruit juices and sweet teas can be full of calories so it is just best to stick to water and liven it up by drinking sparkling water with a twist of lemon in it. It is often tempting to drink alcohol when on holiday and while this is perfectly normal remember that most alcohol is full of calories and drinking can make you very hungry and make you consume a late night meal.

The hotel mini bar may be full of temptations so beware of it and maybe keep it locked so that you dont always have access to it. Keep your healthy snacks at hand so that you can grab them whenever you want. You may find that the food is different to your normal diet when on holiday but all countries have fruit, vegetable and fish so there really is no excuse not to eat healthily.

All holidays can consist of a little bit of exercise and you should make a pount of going for a sightseeing walk or bike ride when you can. Most hotels have gyms too so you could always do 30 mins on the treadmill before supper to keep your metabolism going strong.

The most important thing to remember is to focus on the long term goals on not to let things get out of control. You must remember that only you decide that you want to lose weight and don't let outside influences get the better of you and your health.
