Be Happy...Eat Well

Written by Stuart Stevens | Wednesday, 06 December 2006

We all know that diet has an effect on weight and fitness levels but not that many people are aware that your mood can be determined by what you eat. Recent research done in Austria shows that by eating well you could actually rid yourself of depression and have a happier outlook on life. The researchers said that by the careful consumption of certain foods like fish oils found in tuna and salmon for example as well as eating the right vitamins and herbs you may be able to stop having to use expensive anti depressant medication.

The researchers said that the reason being is that these foodstuffs and vitamins actually boost the ability of the brain to absorb chemical messengers that are so important to mental well being and mood. Another observation was that tryptophan that is found in turkey could help your mood as the body can convert tryptophan into serotonin that is a mood enhancer. Maybe that’s why everyone is in a good mood after Christmas dinner.
Vitamins are also important for mental wellness and the researchers said that it was important for depressed people to check their levels of the vitamins B6 and B12. Herbs like Saint John's Wort have been seen to counteract depression before in men and women.

What you eat is so important to your well being as if you eat healthily you will feel better and thus you will have a better outlook on life and so on. Eating badly is a vicious circle and eating well is a virtuous circle and Ukmedix urges people not to just think about the effect of unhealthy eating on their bodies but also on their minds.

Eating healthily means a healthy weight is maintained and this means that you feel good about yourself and your appearance. The full study was published in the science journal called Nutrition and Dietetics.
