More diet research seen by the Ukmedix newsroom shows that a diet that has alot of carbohydrates with a low glycemic index can aid obese and overweight people to shed body fat as well as to reduce the level of dangerous cholesterol in the body thus keeping you safer from any cardiovascular diseases. The glycemic index for food is a number that tells us just how fast food is digested leading to rises in blood sugar levels. Certain complex carbs such as whole grains that are full of fibre have a lower glycemic index when compared to refined foods like sugar.

The research conducted at the University of Sydney involved 129 overweight people from the ages between 18 to 40 who were asked to follow 1of 4 weight loss diet plans over twelve weeks. All the diet plans had lower levels of fat and limited calories to 1400 kcal daily for the women and 1900 kcal daily for the men. The diet plans however were different in that the levels of carbs, protein and glycemic load were varied.

What the results showed was that all the diets had a similar weight loss benefits but that the high carb diet plans when the glycemic load was lowered the actual fat loss doubled. It was also seen that bad cholesterol levels rose with those who had a higher protein diet compared to those using a higher carb intake with a lower glycemic load. The conclusion was that for the short term a high dietary glycemic load could really help with weight loss and could help with cholesterol levels and thus cardiovascular disease.
