Ukmedix has recently received reports of the results of a new study done in the United States that shows that women who regularly consume full fat dairy products are less likely to be overweight and obese than their counterparts who use the low fat and skimmed dairy products.
The study that was initiated by the American Dietetic Association makes interesting reading for those people who have been using low fat dairy products for years to lose weight. However the researchers are divided about the actual reason for this strange phenomenon. The results were by no means vague as almost 20,000 women over a period of nine years were looked and their diets evaluated carefully at in order to come to the answers.
It is possible that the women who consumed dairy products tended to exercise more and get fitter than those on the low fat diets and this that is why their weight was maintained but this is not 100% clear. Other research we have seen at Ukmedix shows for example that many people who consume a lot of Diet Coke and other diet drinks tend to be more overweight than those who don’t. If people are of a normal weight they do not feel the need to use low fat diary products as much as people who are overweight thus this might explain the findings of the study and it could be that the dairy products are having very little effect on the overall weight loss, gain or maintenance.
Other scientist however feel that one of the reasons why full fat diary products are good for your weight is that there is a compound in milk fat called conjugated linoleic acid that could be useful in keeping calories from being stored at fat. What is clear however that the relationship between weight and full fat dairy products needs to be studied more and Ukmedix will endeavour to keep its readers concurrent with any new developments.
