Very young schoolchildren who drink a lot of fruit juices are twice as likely to suffer from being overweight and obese says a new study. The research that was done in the United States looked at over 2,000 children and analyzed their diets carefully and was surprised when the results showed that the children who drank a lot of fruit juice and other fruit drinks which included things like lime cordial were more likely to have a weight problem than the children who drank a lot of fizzy drinks.

Parents think that all fruit juices are good for their children as they come packed with vitamins and other essential nutrients but this is not always the case as many fruit juices have added sugar and are therefore extremely concentrated and full of calories and this should be born in mind. What is happening in many countries where obesity is becoming a problem is that fizzy drinks like Coca Cola and Fanta are being phased out by parents and schools, and are being replaced with fruit juices that sometimes contain even more calories and sugar than the original fizzy drinks.
You should look very carefully at the nutritional values on any fruit juices that you consume or that you give to your children. There is no harm in having fruit juice but if you are trying to maintain or trying to lose weight, drinking too much fruit juice will hamper your efforts as your daily calorie count will shoot up. The report also highlighted the fact that very often these fruit juices are aimed at children and are advertised and marketed so that children will buy them. This can be very misleading for parents who are trying to make sure that their children have a healthy and balanced diet.
