There is growing evidence that people in the United Kingdom are becoming concious of the problem of obesity and are adjusting their diets accordingly. The food industry is also catching on and going around a supermarket today you will see far more “healthy” food being promoted compared to say ten years ago. People are definitely becoming more nutritionally conscious these days and asking more questions about the food that they eat and whether it is good for them.

Even the fast food chain McDonald’s has jumped on to the bandwagon and is now promoting healthier options along side its famous Big Mac burger. You can now eat salads at McDonald’s restaurants and even have porridge for breakfast! McDonald’s has also stopped cooking their chips and other items in hydrogenated oils which reduces the amount of trans fats in the food. Processed food often has high levels of added salt and added sugar and McDonald’s has taken this in hand too and reduced the levels of extra salt in a Happy Meal by twenty percent.
The good thing about the fact that people are becoming nutritionally aware is that restaurants and food manufacturers realise that they cannot get away with producing very unhealthy food because more people are now asking what is in it. They also realise that if the food is healthy people are more probable to buy more of it.
McDonald’s and other fast food restaurant chains are investing millions of pounds in removing harmful additives and preservatives from their food and are also experimenting with healthier options. There’s no doubt that public opinion is having a big effect on changing attitudes to what we eat these days. Nevertheless you cannot blame other people for what you eat and you must always remember that at the end of the day you decide what goes into your mouth and what does not.
