In the United States a new study done on middle aged people shows that drinking more than one fizzy drink a day, [even if they are low calorie diet drinks] can be linked to a much higher risk of suffering from metabolic problems that can cause heart attacks, strokes and diabetes. This is important research because many people drink five or six cans of diet drinks everyday in the belief that they are fine and that because they are low calorie they pose no risk to their weight.

The researchers said that their study clearly shows that those people who drink a lot of fizzy drinks throughout the day have an almost 50% greater chance of suffering from the above mentioned illnesses. The other interesting thing that they noted was that it was not relevant or clinically significant whether they drank the regular versions of the particular drink or the low calorie, low sugar diet versions.
Dr. Ramachandran Vasan who was the lead investigator of this study called the Framingham Heart Study looked at nine thousand men and women over a four year period and analysed their eating and drinking habits as well as their health. Other findings included the fact that those people who drank over one canned fizzy drink every day had a 31% bigger risk of suffering from obesity and a 30% bigger risk of putting on a lot of fat around the tummy area. The researchers also saw that those people who drank a lot of fizzy drinks had a much higher chance of developing high cholesteroland high blood sugar.
The results of this groundbreaking study were published in the journal of the American Heart Association called Circulation. Researchers said that they cannot be sure whether it is actually the soft drinks which are causing the metabolic syndrome problems or whether it is just that people who tend to drink these types of drink also tend to have unhealthy eating habits and lifestyle. The researchers said that more work needed to be done on the subject.
