Trans Fat Can Stop Women Getting Pregnant

Eating trans fat could make women infertile according to a group of scientists and researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health. They say that women who are trying to get pregnant should stay well away from fast food and processed snacks that are likely to contain large amounts of the unhealthy trans fat. The scientists said that this is not just about the link between heavier women always having more of a problem to conceive, but that their research focused specifically on trans and its link to fertility.

The scientists believe that the trans fat may be reacting with the mechanism of a cell receptor that is linked to glucose metabolism insulin sensitivity and also inflammation. In previous research done by other scientists it was seen that whenever drugs were used to activate that particular receptor the fertility of a woman improved especially when they suffered from polycystic ovary syndrome.

The scientists admit that they are not completely sure why the trans fat reduces fertility but the data that was looked at from over 18,000 women who took part in the survey and who were trying to that pregnant clearly shows that trans fat blocks fertility in women. The researchers claim that for each 2% increase in the number of calories received from trans fat in place of carbs in a woman’s diet, the chances of infertility increased by a whopping 73%!

The researchers said that the results surprised them and were are clear signal that all women who wish to conceive should stay well away from trans fat. Trans fat is found in food that has been fried with hydrogenated vegetable oil and in America plans are in process to ban the cooking oil being used in restaurants as it is said to cause also cause heart disease and blocked arteries.
