Pfizer Testing Weight Loss Drugs

Written by Stuart Stevens | Monday, 11 December 2006

The makers of Viagra the best selling erectile dysfunction medication worldwide are hoping to soon launch a weight loss drug that will take on the likes of Acomplia and Reductil. In an announcement they said that in fact two drugs are earmarked for further testing and research that both seem to be as effective as the weight loss drug Acomplia that is made by Sanofi-Aventis. The spokesmen for Pfizer said that in research those people who used 15milligrams or 25 milligrams of a medication codenamed CP-945,598 shed around 7% to 8% of their overall body weight. The CP-945,598 dug works as a CB-1 antagonist in the same way that Acomplia does.

When the figures were then adjusted to take into consideration the placebo group who were also following a low calorie diet it was noted that those people who were using the 15 milligram dose of CP-945,598 shed 4.8% over and above what the placebo group lost. Those men and women who used the Acomplia in another trial called the RIO-Europe study only shed 4.5% over placebo and those using the 25milligram of CP-945,598 dose shed 4.4% over placebo.

Pfizer noted that they needed to do more development n the drug and they said that they have started the Phase III clinical trials that re required ahead of submission to the FDA for full marketing and selling approval.

The trial that are required by the FDA will take around 2 years to complete and possibly longer especially if they run into problems like the Acomplia drug seems to have encountered. The FDA is very strict with testing and with America being the largest weight loss drug market in the world it pays them to make sure that all drugs are rigorously tested before the general public use them.

Pfizer also said that it has another weight loss drug undergoing Phase II clinical trials that is codenamed MTPi. This drug is not an appetite suppressant but a drug that works like Xenical blocking the fat from getting absorbed into the gut. The results are also good with this weight loss drug producing an average overall body weight loss of 6%.
