Everyone knows at Ukmedix News that we love the Mediterranean diet and that from the literally thousands of research projects that we have seen on different diets from all around the world if is always the Mediterranean diet of fruit, vegetables, fish and other natural products that seems to be eaten in areas where obesity and heart disease are extremely rare.

A new research project that was done with the Mediterranean diet decided not to look at whether eating these foods would help your heart or your weight but whether it could have an affect on asthma in children. The research was done with a team of scientists from Spain Greece and the United Kingdom and they looked at the eating habits and health of nearly 700 children living in an area of Crete where asthma is extremely rare. From their studies they saw that those children who consumed a large amount of fruit and veg were less likely to suffer from asthma. In the UK ten percent of children report some degree of asthma but in this area of Crete called Thorax it is extremely rare.
The researchers believe that children who eat foods high in antioxidants are less likely to get asthma and it has been noted that in the UK the consumption of for example fruit and vegetables by children has dropped dramatically while at the same time the rate of children getting asthma has increased dramatically. The consumption of nuts was also singled out for praise as it was seen that those who ate nuts at least three times weekly were less likely to suffer from asthma. Nuts contain Vitamin E that is known to be the human body’s main defence from cells getting damaged by free radicals. It is also argued that because nuts contain magnesium they can boost the strength of the lungs.
