Researchers Looking for Obesity Causes

Written by Stuart Stevens | Tuesday, 04 July 2006

In yet another research project into the causes of obesity carried out in the United States, scientists from the University of Alabama have made a list of ten obesity indicators. The obvious ones like diet and exercise are still relevant they say, but other factors can come into play and may contribute to the growing obesity numbers in America.

The first obesity factor is lack of good sleep. Research recently reported on by ukmedix shows that people that don't sleep well have more hunger pangs and bad eating patterns that those who sleep well. The second obesity factor is the presence of endocrine disruptor substances that are found in food, pesticides and medications which are known to affect fats in the human body causing obesity.

Obesity factor three is air conditioning as research shows that people who are in air conditioned all day use up fewer calories than those who work in hotter environments. Obesity factor 4 is that the obesity numbers in America have also been affected by the reason that there are far more Hispanics than there used to be and thus the obesity statistics have risen. The fall in the number of people smoking is obesity factor 5 and mothers giving birth when older and thus boosting the chances of obesity is number 6.

Number 7 is due to changing genetic influences in pregnant women and number 8 is Darwinian natural selection. Number 9 is due to obese people tending to mate with other obese people, often ending up by producing obese kids who have a poor diet from the example set by their parents. Finally, the number 10 obesity factor and probably the most important and obvious obesity factor is excessive eating and little or no exercise.

Many things can cause obesity but ukmedix warns that in the vast majority of examples obesity is the result of eating too much and not exercising at all. Many people try to blame the fact that they are obese on other reasons and this can be misleading and thus they continue to deny the truth that they need to cut back on the calories and do some physical activity.
