Steven Vaught an American man of 39 has been walking across from the West Coast of the United States since last April starting in Oceanside, California almost a year ago. In the time from April 2005 he has walked 2,300 miles. His epic walk is getting attention with the media getting interested and he now has fans from all over the world following his progress.
The original motivation for this walk was to lose weight and to get out of a cycle of unhealthy living and eating. When he started the the walk Steve weighed over 400 pounds and carried an 85 pound rucksack with all his things. He now weighs below 300 pounds and has learnt to live with a bare minimum and so has got his rucksack down to thirty pounds. The big reduction of close to two hundred pounds in weight altogether means that the walking is much more easy going now and he is finding the walking more fun.
Steve is now only one thousand kilometres away from the East Coast. The weather's a little cold he says, but his spirits couldn't be higher and he is very determined and focused to finish his walk in around six weeks. A problem he had on his trek was finding good food to eat on the way. The temptation of fast food was ever present at stops on the way, especially at the camps where he pitched his tent when out of town. He said that it required much will power not to eat badly on the way.
Steve Vaught says that he feels happy that he is bringing attention to the American obesity problem and hopes that his walk can inspire other people to take up a little exercise. He also noted that in his life he has been both thin and fat and that being thin is better by far.
