The University of Minnesota has recently come up with some interesting research backed observations namely that teenagers who diet and follow unhealthy weight loss patterns are likely in older age to be obese and overweight as well as be the suffers of eating disorders. The research that has now been printed in a leading Journal of the American Dietetic Association noted that adolescents who regularily had bad eating patterns like binge eating, vomiting when overeating, using slimming supplements, laxatives or diuretics, had a 3 times greater chance of being overweight in 5 years.
This study is important because it adds substance to the argument that the only seriously proven heathly and sustainable weight loss program is sensible dieting in the long term and that people who use quick fix solutions are much more likely to end up obese and overweight. The research supports the idea that the best diet is a change in lifestyle and attitude to food. Obesity can't be beaten in the long term by a short term solution.
The research was very extensive in that over two thousand teenagers were questioned, studied and weighed at regular intervals. Their BMI figure and eating habits were carefully considered over the five year period and the reserachers felt that the large number of participants validated their research and conclusions.
