A speaker at the Annual Conference of the American Heart Association (AHA) in a keynote speech, outlined the beneficial effects of a Mediterranean style diet that contains a lot of fruit, veg, seafood, a little wine and food that has very small amounts of saturated fats. Inflammation in old people can lead to heart disease problems and cardiovascular disease like heart attacks and strokes. A Mediterranean diet is especially good for the elderly.
The speaker at the conference spoke about the research done by the Stanford School of Medicine which examined over nine hundred old but healthy men and women from the Mediterranean. They took note of the diet of these people and the amounts of C reactive protein present within their bodies, that is known to be an indicator of inflammation and also linked to heart disease.
The benefits of a Mediterranean diet have always be lauded by nutritionists and researchers and this study is another reason for them to do so. The researchers said that a Mediterranean diet is full of anti oxidants like oranges, apples, marrows and all the other fruits and vegetables, which coupled with anti-inflammatory properties could be the reason for the high level of protection against cardiovascular diseases.
