Ukmedix is pleased to hear that the UK government is taking an important step in the right direction in the battle to control the continually growing obesity problem in the country. In new guidelines given to all UK doctors the advice given is to bring up the weight issue of any of their patients even if they are being consulted about something else not related to weight. This idea of getting to the patients directly and not skirting around the issue will hopefully encourage more people to diet, exercise and live healthily.
The UK government is getting increasingly worried about the obesity problem across the country especially in the inner cities which have some of the greatest rates of obesity in Europe and the cost to the state of obesity related illnesses is huge and ever growing.
The guidelines specifically tell all UK doctors to look at the problem of obesity as a medical problem and as an illness and give good quality advice about the problem and explain what continued obesity can do to the health of the person. People need to understand that obesity will have far reaching health consequences like heart disease, diabetes and cancer if not treated.
The GP's are also asked to explain that exercise is an important factor of any diet and that fast food and high fat content food must be regulated.
The guidelines also explain that many people especially teenagers and children are very sensitive about their obesity problem and that binging up the subject must be done in a tactful way to avoid offence and embarassment. Many children have a hard time at school due to being overweight and so they really need help and advice to lose weight and to boost their self esteem.
The new guidelines are trying to get the doctors to go to the obesity instead of waiting for the obesity to come to them and to make sure that weight loss is treated as a serious health issue and not just a cosmetic one.
