While giving the appearance of being of a normal weight some people actually are unhealthily overweight and as the Mayo Clinic puts it ‘Thin People Can Be Overweight’. As a result they have invested in a new machine which accurately measures your body fat percentage. The machine which is like a science fiction capsule functions by measuring the quantity of air that your body displaces when you are put inside it and therefore extremely accurately measures the percentage of body fat on your body. While you may stand on the weighing scales and have a low BMI this machine will tell you whether you are suffering from a condition called ‘normal weight obesity’.

Dr. Lopez-Jiminez from the Mayo Clinic said that the way to treat people who suffered from normal weight obesity was to get them to undertake strength training using weights which would build up muscle mass and reduce the percentage of fat on their bodies. Men should not have a body fat percentage of over 25 percent and women should not have a body fat percentage of over 35 percent if they are to stay healthy and lower their risk of hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes and cardio disease.
At Ukmedix News we have previously written about the problem of high body fat percentages in normal looking individuals. These people have large amounts of fat around their important digestive organs such as the liver and kidneys as well as around the heart. This type of fat is called visceral fat and is considered to be more dangerous than the more visible fat that overweight people have.
The best way to keep visceral fat off your body is to exercise as well as to eat healthily and sensibly.
