Recently Ukmedix News reported on the new statistics which show that the Australian people are possibly more overweight and obese than the people of America. The statistics which were collected by the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that the State of Queensland for example has around 60 percent of men who are clinically overweight or obese with a BMI of either 25+ or 30+ respectively.

The Australian government is concerned that the worldwide image of the nation as being full of healthy, rugged outdoor types as portrayed by films such as Crocodile Dundee is diminishing fast and something needs to be done as quickly as possible. In response to these obesity statistics the regional government of Queensland has come up with an initiative which will award a $1 million prize to any local community that comes up with the best and most effective proposal to beat the growing weight problem.
The idea is that different towns in the province of Queensland will be competing with each other to take the prize of “Queensland's Healthiest Community”. The $1 million prize will be used to build something to combat obesity such as a swimming pool, a tennis court or similar.
At Ukmedix News we believe that initiatives like this are useful because they highlight the health dangers of obesity and get people talking about it. It is important that citizens are made aware that it is not normal for large percentages of the population to be overweight. Another thing which should be taken into account about this million dollar prize is that in fact the money could prove to be a lucrative investment. We have noticed that when governments spend large amounts of money on health campaigns to combat obesity they often do so in response to huge increases in expenses connected with obesity related illnesses.
It may be that this million dollar prize awarded by the government of Queensland will encourage enough people to start to lose weight and therefore end up reducing the medical bills paid out by the province. The Australian people should be aware that time is not on their side and that they should quickly be coming up with similar initiatives before the problem becomes unmanageable.
