doctors and nurses were extremely unsympathetic to their size

A research project undertaken in Texas has shown that overweight or obese women find the process of getting good health care extremely stressful. The women who were extensively interviewed for this research project were between the ages of 20 and 61 and said that they were often upset by the reaction to their weight by doctors and nurses.

Study Shows Obese Women Dislike Healthcare Experiences

Professor Emily Merrill who led the study said that overweight and obese women felt slightly more comfortable with their own usual doctors but did not enjoy the experience of consulting with specialists. The obese women in the study said that they were often made to feel extremely embarrassed because normal medical equipment such as blood pressure cuff, gowns and beds were too small for them.

All of the women who took part in this research said that they had tried to lose weight in the past but failed and therefore they felt that many health care professionals viewed them as failures. The researchers said that many of the obese women said that they were treated as if they weren’t human and that the doctors and nurses were extremely unsympathetic to their size.

One of the big problems that obese people have to deal with is the negative perception that many people give them. Research has shown that obese people are perceived to be less intelligent and lazier than normal weight individuals and many well meaning doctors and nurses sometimes subconsciously treat them in an offhand manner.

It should always be remembered that obesity does much psychological damage to the people who suffer from it and the conditions should not just be treated as a physical one.

At Ukmedix News we believe that doctors and nurses should be especially sympathetic to obese men and women because they are the people who can often have a positive influence on getting them to eat healthily and get exercise. A bad experience at a hospital can often lead to already overweight people putting on even more weight and being distrustful of the advice given to them by health professionals.
