Men and women athletes who consume a large amount of calories every day in order to sustain their sporting prowess sometimes find it very difficult to get back to normal eating habits when they retire and stop playing their respective sports. For example the Olympic gold medal winner Michael Phelps is reported to eat as much as 12,000 calories a day when he is at his peak training level and for him to suddenly drop down to around 2,000 calories which is a normal requirement for a man will obviously be difficult. 

Study Shows Ex NFL Players Are Often Obese

We get used to eating certain foods and that is why dieting can be so difficult especially for people who were brought up eating a lot of unhealthy food. It is not just a shock for the physical system to suddenly eat considerably less but it is also a psychological challenge because you feel that you are missing out on what you are used to.

Recently the Mayo Clinic in America did a study with almost 470 retired National Football League (NFL) players to examine whether they were still as healthy now as they were when they played professional football, and on average they were seen to be in the category of severely obese meaning that they had a BMI of 35 plus.

One retired player explained that after twelve years of developing high calorie eating habits to sustain huge muscle bulk and physical excellence it is extremely difficult to suddenly consume half the food that you used to eat.  If you are a man who could easily polish off a large burger and fries being told that salad is on the menu is extremely unappealing.

All men and women should realise that the older they get and the less they move around, the less they must eat. Alternatively they must make sure that they keep moving and get exercise every day if they don’t want to change their diets. In time however this will be difficult because as a 60 or 70 year old you will not be able to sustain the same amount of activity as you were when you were in your twenties and thirties.
