A new study conducted by the American College of Sports Medicine has examined the best way to lose weight around the abdomen. Just under 30 middle aged women suffering from obesity, high blood pressure and other obesity related illnesses took part in the study and were assigned to different groups.

Seven of the women were used as a placebo group and were not told to take any exercise. Eleven of the women were asked to undertake low intensity exercise which was categorised as undertaking workouts which exerted them to 50% to 60% of maximum capability five times a week. Nine of the women were us to undertake low intensity exercise two days a week and high intensity exercise, (categorised as 75 to 80 percent maximum capability) for three times a week.
The results which were presented after a sixteen week period were striking with all the women having definite improvements in cardiovascular fitness and a significant lowering of blood pressure. However the really significant changes were observed in the group who undertook higher intensity workouts because they lost on average over 2in. from their waist measurement. Interestingly also it was observed from clinical testing that they had actually lost visceral fat which is the very unhealthy and deeply embedded fat that surrounds vital organs.
The lead researcher of this project Dr. Arthur Weltman from the University of Virginia explained that many middle aged obese women felt that they were unable to do intensive exercise and thus avoided it, but it was seen that this was the most effective way to remove the internal belly fat that is thought to be connected to so many obesity related illnesses.
Some people think they are too old to go to the gym but this is not the case and many research projects show that even moderate exercise at an advanced age can improve health and quality of life significantly. High intensity exercise also increases muscle strength and size and this can help you to burn more calories even when you are not exercising.
So if it is stubborn belly fat that you can’t get rid of, a bit of high intensity exercise a few times a week could be what you’re looking for.

when i read the title i thought there might be some easy way to get rid of belly fat..i dont really think that exercise is anything a scientist had to tell me...what waste of a study!

umm i think we already knew that exercise burns fat in general..not just belly fat. did not really require a study!

The purpose of the study was to prove that long low intensity aerobic exercise is not as effective in burning body fat than short high intensity exercise. So forget the treadmill runs and walks and go for short sprints and and weights and save time in the gym.
