At Ukmedix News we often write about the risks of being obese and we have recently came across one risk which we reckon that most people are compltely unaware of. Did you know that by being obese you increase your chances of getting Alzheimer's disease by a huge 80 percent?

The research which was done by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health located in Baltimore clearly saw that normal weight individuals suffered from Alzheimer's far less than men and women with a BMI of 30 plus. Interestingly the researchers also noted that people who were underweight also increased their risk of suffering from Alzheimer's by a smaller percentage of 36 percent.
This research is not the first time that the link between Alzheimer's and the excess weight has been studied but it is probably the most comprehensive review of all the different studies that have been done. In all the researchers analyzed ten different studies done in different parts of the world dating back to 1995 and they focused on not only Alzheimer's but also different types of dementia such as vascular dementia which has been linked to people suffering from high cholesterol and high blood pressure.
The final results of the research showed that overall obesity increased the likelihood of suffering from any type dementia in both men and women by an average of 42% and that Alzheimer's was the particular type of dementia in which the risk increased the most with obesity. There was also a slightly larger risk factor for women developing Alzheimer's with obesity compared to men but men were more likely to develop vascular dementia than women when obese.
You would not normally associate being overweight or obese with any sort of mental problem but it is clearly the case that this is true, and therefore you must remember that by staying trim and slim you are investing in your mental health for the future.
