At Ukmedix News we have previously written about the importance of including Omega-3 fatty acids in your diet and how clinical evidence shows that they can protect your heart. Omega-3 fatty acids which are very prevalent in the Mediterranean diet are credited with the longevity and good health in old age which is experienced by those people who follow it.

New evidence however has come to light which shows that even people who are obese benefit significantly by including Omega-3 fatty acids into their diet because it can protect their livers from the damage which being significantly overweight and obese causes. The research also explains why some obese men and women suffer more from obesity related problems than others.
One of the researchers from the University of Barcelona, Professor Joan Claria explained that this study showed that specific lipids known as protectins and resolvins which come from Omega-3 fatty acids can reduce the likelihood of hepatic steatosis as well as insulin resistance in obese individuals. The research which was done using lab mice and a variety of different diets produce clear evidence of the benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids in protecting their livers and making them healthier generally.
If you are overweight or obese you should take note of this research because it shows how you can protect yourself from some of the harmful effects of your weight. By eating greater amounts of fish and using natural oils such as olive oil and canola oil you could make significant inroads into protecting your liver from long term damage.
If you want to take it a little bit further trying to follow a Mediterranean diet which includes lots of natural produce such as fruit, vegetables, nuts and a lot of fish could not only make your internal organs significantly healthier but also help you to lose weight.
The research was published in the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology Journal.
