the possible development of new treatments for obesity related illnesses

Here we go again! A group of scientists have yet again discovered the obesity gene! How many times has this headline been seen?

obesity gene discovered...again

In this new discovery scientists from Kings College London and from the University of Oxford say that they have discovered the 'master regulator' gene which actually controls how fat behaves in the human body. They said that this discovery could lead to a better knowledge of obesity and also to the possible development of new treatments for obesity related illnesses.

The gene called KLF14 which was previously seen to have an effect on cholesterol and Type 2 diabetes is now known to be connected to a whole range of different weight problems such as a high BMI and insulin levels.

At Ukmedix News while we welcome all obesity related research we are a little bit skeptical about broad statements which claim to have discovered the obesity gene, therefore somehow implying that it can be switched off and you'll become slim with no effort.

Ukmedix News has written about another genetic discovery called the FATSO gene a number of times and it should be noted that those people who have this gene while they are more likely to be obese, many individuals who have it are perfectly slim. Of course, having good genes can help you to be slim, but blaming them for your weight problem is very counterproductive and defeatist. Millions of overweight people claim to have obesity genes when in fact they don't have any and just use their own diagnosis of their genetic defects as a reason for not making the effort to live healthily.

Having genes which make you more susceptible to obesity should just make you more health conscious and more careful with your diet. In the same way that individuals who have a history of cancer in their family should never smoke, individuals who have overweight and obese families should make that extra effort to preach healthy eating and exercise to their children to break the family cycle of obesity.

If you need that extra help and push with your weight loss efforts Ukmedix can help.
