Eventually he was moved using a specially adapted obesity ambulance

A recent incident which has highlighted the extent of the growing obesity problem in the United Kingdom involved a 30 stone man who died after paramedics who were trying to get him into an ambulance were unable to complete the task and he fell out into the street. Mr. Williams from Suffolk was on his way to hospital for important surgery to save his life when the accident occurred.

Obesity Ambulance Required After 30 Stone Man Falls

A number of options had been considered to move Mr. Williams off the street after the accident including the use of a Chinook helicopter with a heavy duty winch and a forklift truck. Eventually he was moved using a specially adapted obesity ambulance which is extra large and also has strengthened winches and pulleys to get obese people into it without putting paramedics in danger.

These special ambulances which cost almost £100,000 are becoming standard equipment for many National Health Service Trusts around the United Kingdom. Paramedics are requesting these reinforced ambulances because they say that they put their own health in danger trying to carry obese people into normal ambulances. These ambulances are just one example of how obesity puts a huge financial strain on the National Health Service.  Obesity is now the second most preventable cause of death and illness in the United Kingdom after smoking and many health experts estimate that in a decade or two it could even overtake smoking to the number one spot.

Obesity is a slow and silent killer which causes a whole list of illnesses including cancer and heart disease and aggravates practically every other health condition known to man. Obese individuals have a lower quality of life, are discriminated against and are even paid less in the workplace.
