Sleep, Obesity And Testosterone Connection To Be Studied

Good sleep is essential for good health...

A joint research project which is being done at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research and the Anzac Research Institute in Australia is attempting to examine the link between bad sleeping patterns and low levels of testosterone in men. This research could be incredibly important into understanding why levels of testosterone in men have been dropping over the last twenty years.

Sleep, Obesity And Testosterone Connection To Be Studied

According to one report that was published in the respected medical magazine, The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism the levels of male testosterone have fallen by twenty percent since the end of the 1980’s. The researchers feel that if they administer testosterone injections to men who have sleeping problems like sleep apnoea they could cure them of their problem. They are also speculating that the injections of testosterone will also help men who are overweight as their metabolisms will improve.

It is common knowledge today that individuals who do not sleep well are more likely to be overweight and Ukmedix News has reported on this on a number of occasions. The condition obstructive sleep apnoea occurs when muscles that are found in the upper airways relax too much and thus cause men to have obstructed breathing when they are sleep.

The research project requires around 70 men who are overweight or obese and who suffer from sleep apnoea to take part in the exercise. The men will be given a diet to follow, will be asked to do some exercise and will also be receiving injections of testosterone. They may have to sleep in laboratories some nights so that their sleeping patterns can be very meticulously examined.

The fast pace of modern life means that both men and women in the United Kingdom and indeed the world are getting less sleep. Good sleep is essential for good health and bad sleep is linked to a host of medical illnesses which are too numerous to list. If it can be proven that lack of sleep is linked to lower levels of testosterone this could encourage men to sleep more. At Ukmedix News we feel that the knowledge that good sleep is important for a healthy metabolism and can reduce your chances of suffering from weight problems should also be more widely publicised.
