Tape Measure To Beat Obesity

Doctors are increasingly turning to a simple way off checking whether you are overweight or not by using a tape measure. While the body mass index method of measurement is in the vast majority of cases effective it does not examine a person’s weight in different parts of the body. There have been cases of men who are very bulky but nevertheless have a healthy weight and who have a BMI of 25+ placing them in an overweight category.

The best way for these men to measure whether they should be losing weight or not is to get a tape measure and place it around their waists. Fat around stomach is a major indicator of heart disease and diabetes as well as a list of other obesity related illnesses. Some people only tend to put on fat around their stomach which they can hide easily and this may give them the appearance that they are not in fact overweight at all however they need to seriously consider that they are in a high risk category for diabetes and cardio illnesses.
Doctors also should measure the blood sugar levels of overweight patients as this will also give them a good indication of whether they are likely to get diabetes in the future. Doctors must also not be afraid to give patients who come to see them stern warnings and advice about their weight and explain to them clearly the dangers of not getting exercise and eating too much for a long period of time.
At Ukmedix News we have come across reports of overweight and obese people who say they were severely offended by what their doctors said to them about their weight. While we sympathise with the patients they will only wish that the doctor had been even more firm with them when the onset of heart disease or some other obesity related illness kicks in and their quality of life is destroyed.
