Researchers Discover The Stress And Obesity Link

Written by Stuart Stevens | Wednesday, 04 July 2007

The connection between stress and weight problems is not new to science...

Did you know that you being nervous and stressed can actually induce you to become obese? New search that was recently published by Professor Herzog who is the Director of the Neuroscience Research Program based at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research along with the team of different nutritional scientists from America and Slovakia have confirmed that the neuropeptide Y(NPY), which is a molecule which the body produces when it is stressed will activate the Y2 receptors in fat cells that in turn will stimulate them to multiply in number and grow in size. From this they reasoned that by blocking these receptors they could prevent the body’s fat cells from growing and even possibly kill them.

Researchers Discover The Stress And Obesity Link

Professor Herzog noted that the connection between extreme stress and weight problems is not one that is new to science. For years people have known about this link but it was not scientifically understood very well. Professor Herzog now says that the exact mechanism of molecular patterns and events that connect stress with obesity have been properly documented and researched.

The scientist did a lot of work with mice who they split into two different groups and stressed out one group and allowed the other group to live in a calm environment.  They gave both groups of mice the same diet and gave them the same exercise and found that the stressed ones put on more weight and had much higher levels of the neuropeptide Y.

Now that the scientists have found out and properly documented the link it may be possible for them to work on potential cures for the stress induced obesity problem that could help people to lose weight and reduce the chances of them suffering from heart disease, cancer and diabetes as well as any other illness connected with obesity.
