Obesity In Britain Rising

Written by Stuart Stevens | Thursday, 24 August 2006

Ukmedix has learnt of new research which shows that in about 4 years it is likely that one third of all Britons will be obese and this unprecedented rise in obesity rates could put a big strain financial and otherwise on the National Health Service of the UK. The report looks at the resons behind this obesity surge and concludes that the presence of junk food in out daily diets along with lazy and inactive lifestyles are the cause of the weight problem facing the UK. The report authors usrge people to cut out the junk food and to do some exercise so that they will get back into shape.

America is known to be the most obese nation in the world and it appears that the United Kingdom is now in second place. At the same time gyms and health information are increasing but they are failing to stop the overall obesity rise. Since the year 2003 it appears that another four million people have increased their BMI to a number over 30 making them clinically obese.

The UK government is busy coming up with initiatives to beat the problem but none of them have made any serious headway into stopping the obesity problem. The government is also telling food manufacturers to produce healthier foodstuffs and to promote healthy varieties of food in supermarkets and the NHS has even taken on heath trainers in a move to encourage overweight and obese people to lose weight.

All over the UK there appears to be a big increase in the amount of people who regularily visit the gym and take their health seriously, but at the same time many more people are becoming obese and overweight and this tends to be found more with people who are in poorer socio economic groups. Obesity causes many health problems that impact on quality of life and cost the NHS millions of pounds yearly.
