In the United Kingdom there many nurses who are complaining that their jobs are becoming more and more dangerous due to the rising number of obese persons in the nation. The statistics clearly show that far more nurses are complaining of back pain and are seeking treatment for it on the National Health Service.

In fact almost 5,000 nurses are at present receiving treatment for their back pain according to figures released by the British Chiropractic Association. The likelihood is that it is not only the obese patients that the nurses have to deal with that is causing the problem but also because the number of obese and overweight nurses is rising too, meaning that they are putting an added strain on their own backs as well. The BCA also commented that it is likely in the future that the figure of 5,000 will increase and this will put an added strain on the National Health Service.
Nurses Unions are also aware of the problem and have been lobbying for safer working practices for their members. Ukmedix News has noted that many hospitals are now ordering special winches and pulleys to move some of these obese people around safely without hurting the backs of nurses and other hospital personnel.
The Nurses Unions are also aware that some of their members are taking early retirement due to the strain of lifting heavy people and that therefore these retired nurses do not appear on the official statistics. One of the leading nurses unions called Amicus said that the biggest reason why nurses take early retirement is because of muscular skeletal problems and the biggest cause of this is over work and over strain of the back.
The obesity problem in the United Kingdom is not an easy one and is costing the state literally billions of pounds each and every year in direct and indirect expenses. At Ukmedix News we believe that initiatives to curb obesity in the UK will save the nation millions of pounds every year and should considered as an investment in the health of its people and the financial health of the country.
