Obesity Runs In The Family

Written by Stuart Stevens | Tuesday, 04 July 2006

Ukmedix has been looking at some recent research conducted in Ireland that shows that the children of obese parents are more likely to be obese than the children of parents who are not obese. The report called the Diet and Lifestyle of Children in Ireland shows that these obese families eat a greater quantity of fatty foods that the attitude to diet and nutrition in a family are very important factors in determining what and how a child will develop its his or her eating patterns and habits.

The extensive report that was published by food and diet experts at the Trinity College in Dublin as well as the University College Cork came up with number of definite conclusions regarding eating habits and statistics. For example they said that children coming from families that were obese or overweight tended to prefer fatty food over eating frech fruit and veg. The report also saw that they were more likely to overeat and noted that the mother of the family was more important in determining the eating habits of the children than the father in the family.

The report saw that the kids look up to their parents regarding food and thus they take a cue from the eating habits of the mother and father. The report advised that by looking at the parent's eating habits and by giving them good dieting and nutrition advice the children were more likely to develop better eating habits themselves.

Ukmedix has come across other reports that note the correlation between parents eating patterns and the weight related health of the children in the family. Ukmedix advises that nutritional education is essential for a good and balanced diet and that exercise must play a part of a good weight loss program.
